About this tool

Image compression reduces file size while keeping the visible quality as much as possible. It helps when you want a web page to load faster or need to attach an image to email or chat. This tool compresses the image you choose entirely in your browser and never uploads it to a server.

Quality vs. size is a trade-off

JPEG and WebP use lossy compression, giving up a little quality to cut size significantly. Lower quality means a lighter file, but going too far shows blurred edges and block noise. For the web, around 70–85% quality is a good balance of size and appearance. Adjust to the use case.

Repeated saving degrades it

A lossy image degrades a little each time you open and re-save it (generation loss). Keep source data you will edit repeatedly in a lossless format like PNG or at high quality, and compress only on the final export. Avoid compressing an already-compressed JPEG over and over.

Thinking by use case

  • Web — speed matters, so compress freely. If WebP is available, it keeps size down.
  • Email/chat attachments — go light to fit the recipient's limits; photos usually survive heavy compression fine.
  • Print/archival — prioritize quality; over-compression shows flaws in print, so go easy.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser, and the image never leaves your device.

How much quality is lost?

It depends on the quality setting. For photos you can often cut size dramatically with barely noticeable difference. Adjust quality to fit your use.

Why does the file get smaller?

Mainly through lossy compression, which discards fine detail that people are unlikely to notice. Lower quality means smaller size but more degradation.

Can it compress transparent PNGs?

It handles images with transparency, but photo-style compression is more effective with JPEG/WebP. Choose the format based on whether you need transparency.

Can I also change the dimensions?

For resizing, the "Image Resizer" tool is more suitable. Resizing first and then compressing reduces size even further.

Does repeated compression degrade the image?

Repeated lossy compression gradually degrades quality. It is best to compress once from the original to your target size.
